Simmzy´s Manhattan Beach and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) have partnered for one night only to raise awareness for blood cancer. Simmzy´s Manhattan Beach is generously donating a percentage of sales to LLS, in honor of Audrey & Nicholas, two amazing kids courageously battling blood cancer.

In 2005, 5-month old Nicholas Lee was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), a form of Leukemia that’s rarely seen in children. Normally AML would be treated with a bone marrow transplant, but the cancer had forced its way into Nicholas’s central nervous system. Nicholas stubbornly fought and won the first of what was to be many battles for his life. Seven years later, Nicholas continues to live life to the fullest.

Turner Classic Movies Presents 70th Anniversary Event: ‘Casablanca’ http://blog.southbayevents.com/2012/03/20/turner-classic-movies-presents-70th-anniversary-event-casablanca/ http://blog.southbayevents.com/2012/03/20/turner-classic-movies-presents-70th-anniversary-event-casablanca/#comments Tue, 20 Mar 2012 19:09:25 +0000 South Bay Events http://blog.southbayevents.com/?p=399 70th Anniversary of Casablanca

It’s been 69 years since Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman romanced their way through iconic black and white cinematography, making what was easily the most quoted movie of the 20th century. A nightclub owner, smoke, love before war, and a host of cool characters are just some of the themes that make “Casablanca” an eternal classic. In 1943, Warner Bothers and director Michael Curtiz, received a Best Picture Oscar Award for “Casablanca.” The movie is an enduring American legacy and will grace the silver screen one more time.

On Wednesday, March 21st, Turner Classic Movies celebrates the 70th anniversary of the time honored romance “Casablanca” with screenings in approximately 500 theaters across the nation. TCM has partnered up with NCM Fathom Events and its Digital Broadcast Network to showcase this World War II movie set in an unoccupied part of Africa.

Most AMC Theaters in the South Bay will be screening TCM’s 70th Anniversary of “Casablanca”, specifically AMC Rolliong Hills, AMC Del Amo, and AMC South Bay Galleria. Screening times vary between 2:00pm and 7:00pm.

The 2012 Los Angeles International Flamenco Festival

Grammy winning flamenco artist Vicente Amigo

One of Spain´s most melodic treasures travels to the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center through the strings of Vicente Amigo and the return of the 2012 Los Angeles International Flamenco Festival. The feeling of flamenco music, or the "duende", draws its sound and dance from a hybrid of Spanish, Gypsy, and Moorish influences. What was once a voice for the poor and repressed is now a global art form that takes audiences on a beautiful but emotional flamenco journey. This year"s festival is a two-day event featuring one of flamenco´s biggest stars, Vicente Amigo on Saturday, March 24th. The following day showcases the first American dance company to ever produce Spanish dance, Theatre Flamenco, on Sunday, March 25th.

Amigo´s international recognition stems from his fame amongst fans of Spanish-language pop and a critically acclaimed fourth album titled, City of Ideas, which won a Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Album. His worldview perspective includes musical ties with the likes of Sting and Brazilian masters Milton Nascimento and Eliane Elias. Founded in 1966, Theatre Flamenco blossomed during the cultural revolution of the Bay Area in 1960s and provided a catalyst for the revival of Latino arts. Among other featured artists at this year´s festival are Adam del Monte and Nino de Los Reyes.

Produced by Kala Koa Entertainment, Saturday´s festival begins at 8:00 PM and Sunday´s performance starts at 7:00 PM. To find out more about Vicente Amigo and other artists performing at this year´s International Flamenco Festival, click here. The Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center is located at 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd., Redondo Beach. Tickets are $35-$55 and can be purchased at www.laflamencofestival.com/.

Hermosa Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade Re-Scheduled to March 24th http://blog.southbayevents.com/2012/03/15/hermosa-beach-st-patricks-day-parade-re-scheduled-to-march-24th/ http://blog.southbayevents.com/2012/03/15/hermosa-beach-st-patricks-day-parade-re-scheduled-to-march-24th/#comments Thu, 15 Mar 2012 20:49:31 +0000 South Bay Events http://blog.southbayevents.com/?p=385
St. Patrick's Day Parade in Hermosa Beach

Start of 2011's St. Patrick's Day Parade in Hermosa Beach

Unfortunately it looks like St. Patrick’s Day in Hermosa Beach is a touch too authentic this year as typical Irish weather has forced the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce to re-schedule their St. Patrick’s Day Parade till next weekend, Saturday, March 24th. The parade was originally scheduled to take place this Saturday, March 17th, but forecasts from the National Weather Service have predicted heavy rainfall and wind at the scheduled start time for the parade and throughout the day on Saturday. The chance of rain forecasted has been listed as 90%.

The St. Patrick´s Day Parade in Hermosa is a gem of a community event where girl scouts, bag-pipes, and DeLoreans can be found parading next to each other. This year Mother Nature proved to be untimely but the ultimate factor concerning the re-scheduling of the parade is public safety. According to Chamber Executive Director Maureen Hunt, ““The parade is listed as taking place “Rain or Shine”, but safety concerns are the biggest factor in our decision to reschedule the parade to March 24th.” All entrants in the parade are being contacted regarding arrangements for the new date of the parade.

The Strand House An Immediate Hit http://blog.southbayevents.com/2012/02/08/the-strand-house-an-immediate-hit/ http://blog.southbayevents.com/2012/02/08/the-strand-house-an-immediate-hit/#comments Wed, 08 Feb 2012 01:06:31 +0000 South Bay Events http://blog.southbayevents.com/?p=339 It’s always difficult to generate buzz over the opening of a new restaurant, and people are naturally resistant to change. With the closing of a longtime bar and restaurant known as Beaches, many Manhattan Beach locals kept a wary eye on the prime location of the boarded-up eatery to see who would occupy it next. However, the reception of The Strand House by residents of the South Bay has been quick and warm. The Strand House

Situated on arguably the best beachside property in Los Angeles, The Strand House offers up amazing views with few obstructions. Perched almost on top of the Manhattan Beach Pier and with a clear view of the entire Santa Monica Bay, the location is undeniably ideal. The Strand (the world famous beachfront bike path) runs across the foot of the establishment, so people watching is unavoidable. If you can score a table along the coveted front window, it can be hard to focus on the interior of the restaurant with the distractions outside. Perched literally on top of the stretch of sand that is known as “The Birthplace of Beach Volleyball”, The Strand House is a popular spot for a sunset or evening drink after a day on the beach.

The main reason for the instant impact of the restaurant has been the food, however. The addition of an upscale restaurant seems to be what locals were looking for, following the recent gentrification trend in the city. With an extensive menu offering everything from a Braised Rabbit Gnocchi to an amazing Lobster Cavatelli, any palate will be pleased by the variety. The pricing isn’t outrageous and the portions are good-sized, especially on dishes such as the Grilled Jidoori Chicken.

Any visit to the Strand House wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Strand Bar. It’s already becoming a tradition for many locals to have an aptly named “Sunset Over Manhattan” (clementine vodka, fresh tangarine juice, blood orange cordial) or a martini at the end of the day.

The Strand House is located at 117 Manhattan Beach Boulevard in Manhattan Beach, CA and their number is 310.545.7470.

LA Food Show Closing, Abigaile Set To Open http://blog.southbayevents.com/2012/02/04/la-food-show-closing-abigaile-set-to-open/ http://blog.southbayevents.com/2012/02/04/la-food-show-closing-abigaile-set-to-open/#comments Sat, 04 Feb 2012 00:18:02 +0000 South Bay Events http://blog.southbayevents.com/?p=332 For such a well-liked restaurant and meeting spot, surprisingly little uproar is being generated over the closing of L.A. Food Show in Manhattan Beach. The location in Manhattan Village has met its demise and will officially close its doors on February 4, following in the footsteps of its sister location in Beverly Hills. We’ll miss the spicy edamame and amazing grilled artichokes, and hopefully another quality restaurant takes its place.

Union Cattle Company in Hermosa Beach is also closing this week, although the location will retain the same ownership and will be redesigned as a more upscale eatery. The new restaurant is called Abigaile, and will create more flow between the classy Ocean Bar upstairs and the main dining area downstairs. Instead of riding a mechanical bull and devouring a 22 oz. steak, you can sip a dirty martini and have a 1 oz. appetizer. Executive chef Max DiMare will be running the show at Abigaile.

Some South Bay locals and long-time residents are a bit concerned with the relatively recent shift towards a chic style that resembles L.A. or Laguna Beach a bit too much. But, for every person unhappy with the recent gentrification of Hermosa Beach, 2 more people are buying an $800K, 1 bedroom apartment down the street. It may just be a matter of time before Manhattan Beach’s successful makeover of the grungy beach scene oozes south into Hermosa to turn the South Bay into a Bel-Air by the sea. Only time will tell.

The Super Bowl In The South Bay http://blog.southbayevents.com/2012/02/02/the-super-bowl-in-the-south-bay/ http://blog.southbayevents.com/2012/02/02/the-super-bowl-in-the-south-bay/#comments Thu, 02 Feb 2012 04:34:21 +0000 South Bay Events http://blog.southbayevents.com/?p=315 As the big day gets closer, it’s time to plan where to watch the Super Bowl. Even if not you’re a fan of the Patriots or the Giants, you can’t miss the biggest sporting event of the year in the United States. With the evolution of Super Bowl parties over recent years, it’s no wonder the following Monday is the most-missed day by employees across the country. Obnoxious amounts of hot wings, chips and dip, burgers and lots of beer are consumed, and the South Bay probably takes down more than anywhere else. With a forecast of 75 degrees, Super Bowl Sunday 2012 is shaping up to be a raucous “summer” day in January in Los Angeles.

Many people choose to go to house parties in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, but the local drinking establishments have come to realize that Super Bowl Sunday is a huge day for them as well. Many bars such as Baja Sharkeez and Sangria in Hermosa Beach, are gearing up for the football game in a big way. Sharkeez claims 60 flat-screen TVs (we think it’s more like 40) and Sangria will be hosting entertainment for hours before, during and after the game. Included for $25 at Sangria are swim suit models, beer, a taco bar and more with a portion going to charity.

For an upscale scene, head over to Manhattan Beach’s Shade Hotel. All the comforts of home; cozy couches, multiple TVs, great food & drinks, without the set-up or clean-up.

Pretty much anywhere on the Hermosa Pier or in downtown Manhattan Beach will fill up early on game day, so plan on staying at one establishment. Fat Face Fenner’s Fishshack (F.F.F.F.) on the HB Pier is a well-known New England sports bar, so steer clear if you’re a Giants fan.

Super Bowl Sunday is a guaranteed good time, even for part-time sports fans. Make sure you take advantage of the plethora of options in the South Bay and leave the car keys at home.
