It’s always difficult to generate buzz over the opening of a new restaurant, and people are naturally resistant to change. With the closing of a longtime bar and restaurant known as Beaches, many Manhattan Beach locals kept a wary eye on the prime location of the boarded-up eatery to see who would occupy it next. However, the reception of The Strand House by residents of the South Bay has been quick and warm.

Situated on arguably the best beachside property in Los Angeles, The Strand House offers up amazing views with few obstructions. Perched almost on top of the Manhattan Beach Pier and with a clear view of the entire Santa Monica Bay, the location is undeniably ideal. The Strand (the world famous beachfront bike path) runs across the foot of the establishment, so people watching is unavoidable. If you can score a table along the coveted front window, it can be hard to focus on the interior of the restaurant with the distractions outside. Perched literally on top of the stretch of sand that is known as “The Birthplace of Beach Volleyball”, The Strand House is a popular spot for a sunset or evening drink after a day on the beach.

The main reason for the instant impact of the restaurant has been the food, however. The addition of an upscale restaurant seems to be what locals were looking for, following the recent gentrification trend in the city. With an extensive menu offering everything from a Braised Rabbit Gnocchi to an amazing Lobster Cavatelli, any palate will be pleased by the variety. The pricing isn’t outrageous and the portions are good-sized, especially on dishes such as the Grilled Jidoori Chicken.

Any visit to the Strand House wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Strand Bar. It’s already becoming a tradition for many locals to have an aptly named “Sunset Over Manhattan” (clementine vodka, fresh tangarine juice, blood orange cordial) or a martini at the end of the day.

The Strand House is located at 117 Manhattan Beach Boulevard in Manhattan Beach, CA and their number is 310.545.7470.

The location in Manhattan Village has met its demise and will officially close its doors on February 4, following in the footsteps of its sister location in Beverly Hills. We’ll miss the spicy edamame and amazing grilled artichokes, and hopefully another quality restaurant takes its place. Union Cattle Company in Hermosa Beach is also closing this week, although the location will retain the same ownership and will be redesigned as a more upscale eatery. The new restaurant is called Abigaile, and will create more flow between the classy Ocean Bar upstairs and the main dining area downstairs. Instead of riding a mechanical bull and devouring a 22 oz. steak, you can sip a dirty martini and have a 1 oz. appetizer. Executive chef Max DiMare will be running the show at Abigaile. Some South Bay locals and long-time residents are a bit concerned with the relatively recent shift towards a chic style that resembles L.A. or Laguna Beach a bit too much. But, for every person unhappy with the recent gentrification of Hermosa Beach, 2 more people are buying an $800K, 1 bedroom apartment down the street. It may just be a matter of time before Manhattan Beach’s successful makeover of the grungy beach scene oozes south into Hermosa to turn the South Bay into a Bel-Air by the sea. Only time will tell.

With the evolution of Super Bowl parties over recent years, it’s no wonder the following Monday is the most-missed day by employees across the country. Obnoxious amounts of hot wings, chips and dip, burgers and lots of beer are consumed, and the South Bay probably takes down more than anywhere else. With a forecast of 75 degrees, Super Bowl Sunday 2012 is shaping up to be a raucous “summer” day in January in Los Angeles. Many people choose to go to house parties in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, but the local drinking establishments have come to realize that Super Bowl Sunday is a huge day for them as well. Even if not you’re a fan of the Patriots or the Giants, you can’t miss the biggest sporting event of the year in the United States. With the evolution of Super Bowl parties over recent years, it’s no wonder the following Monday is the most-missed day by employees across the country. Obnoxious amounts of hot wings, chips and dip, burgers and lots of beer are consumed, and the South Bay probably takes down more than anywhere else.
Many people choose to go to house parties in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, but the local drinking establishments have come to realize that Super Bowl Sunday is a huge day for them as well. Many bars such as Baja Sharkeez and Sangria in Hermosa Beach, are gearing up for the football game in a big way. Sharkeez claims 60 flat-screen TVs (we think it’s more like 40) and Sangria will be hosting entertainment for hours before, during and after the game. Included for $25 at Sangria are swim suit models, beer, a taco bar and more with a portion going to charity.

For an upscale scene, head over to Manhattan Beach’s Shade Hotel. All the comforts of home; cozy couches, multiple TVs, great food & drinks, without the set-up or clean-up.

Pretty much anywhere on the Hermosa Pier or in downtown Manhattan Beach will fill up early on game day, so plan on staying at one establishment. Fat Face Fenner’s Fishshack (F.F.F.F.) on the HB Pier is a well-known New England sports bar, so steer clear if you’re a Giants fan.

Super Bowl Sunday is a guaranteed good time, even for part-time sports fans. Make sure you take advantage of the plethora of options in the South Bay and leave the car keys at home.

Body Glove is an internationally-known brand that proudly calls the South Bay home. The local waterman community wouldn’t be where it is without the foresight of twin brothers Bill and Bob Meistrell, who established the company in 1953. Known best for inventing wetsuits, the brothers soon began to attract a huge following. What began as a small store evolved into a diving center to buy regulators, air tanks, snorkeling gear, masks and spearfishing equipment. The other half of the store houses surfboards, leashes, swimsuits, wax and much more for serious surfers.

As the company has grown exponentially, Body Glove now sponsors local surfers Alex Gray, Holly Beck, Jamie O’Brien and dozens more. Their dive boat is a permanent fixture off the coast of Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan Beach. Events such as the opening of lobster season are centered around Dive n’ Surf, Body Glove’s local retail arm located near the Redondo Beach Pier. They are a huge part of the local community, hosting events such as the D-Man Festival and the Annual Yard Sale to cater to those who spend time in the ocean.

The pioneering spirit of the Meistrell brothers carries through today as the name Body Glove is synonymous with the South Bay. Stop by and check out their selection of diving and surf gear, whether you want to get started or are a seasoned expert. Dive n’ Surf is located at 504 North Broadway
Redondo Beach, Ca. 90277.

The 3rd Annual LA Beer Week officially begins its two-week adventure in the most idyllic of South Bay beer shrines featuring Stone Brewing Co. as the craft of choice. Stone will be doing a “total tap takeover” at Naja’s by hooking up 40 different taps of their signature brews like Oaked Arrogant Bastard and others (Stone Cali Belgique IPA and Stone Levitation Ale). Maybe even a cask ale too? High level players & brew masters from Stone will be on hand to discuss fermentation, field questions, and in general schmooze with the people.

Thankfully this is a two session event with the first clanking off right after school at 3pm and the second starts at 8pm. Tickets will no doubt go fast and are limited to 200 patrons per session.
Check out S.B.E. SUDS, a page dedicated to the ever-loving expansion of craft beer into the marketplace, throats, and taps of the South Bay and beyond.

Oktoberfest, the worlds biggest, most inviting beer drinking festival exports its Bavarian heritage to the South Bay and beyond this October. What started as a way to celebrate the matrimony of Bavaria’s Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese in 1810 eventually grew into the carnival like atmosphere that engulfs every Oktoberfest celebration today. For whatever reason, the people of Munich were invited to this royal marriage which turned out to be a five-day raging party centered around horse racing. Soon, tradition set in and annual gatherings morphed into anniversary celebrations that held all types of activities like goose chases, an agricultural show, barrel races, and mush eating contests. By the turn of the 20th century Oktoberfest had mechanical rides, beer tents, food vendors, and live music.

In summary, think of Oktoberfest as an extension of a wild wedding party that was cross bred with the evolution of the modern fair or amusement park. Also, much of the entertainment that surrounds Oktoberfest showcases local, regional, and national Bavarian customs (i.e., horse carriages, lederhosen, wooden kegs). The one ingredient that makes everything about Okotberfest seem amazing is beer. Much of German and Bavarian culture revolves around a stein of beer or a whiff of schnapps, but there’s an engineering spirit that endures and is reflected in Germany’s beer.

Every German brewery must adhere to strict standards as beer is something that not only tastes great but also is a conduit for national pride. According to the Reinheitsgebot (established in 1516) all German beer must be brewed with the following ingredients: hops, barely, malt, yeast. Oktoberfest beer usually comes in an amber color and boasts anywhere from a 4.5% – 6.0% ABV. The official beer style of Oktoberfest is called Marzen (Marzenbier) which generally has a mild hoppy flavor and medium to high alcohol content. Only six breweries in Germany are allowed to serve this type of beer at Oktoberfest: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten. Other domestic breweries that make a stylish Oktoberfest beer are Samuel Adams, Beck’s, and Harpoon. Anyone of these German or Domestic Oktoberfest beers is worth a hoist (preferably in a stein).
